National Citizen Party (NCP) member secretary and MP Akhter Hossain has demanded that those who publicly mock the student-public July mass uprising in the name of freedom of expression be brought to justice.

He made the remarks at a seminar organized by the 11-party alliance at the IDEB Multipurpose Hall in Kakrail, in the capital, on Wednesday (July 8). The seminar was titled “The Spirit of the July Mass Uprising, Implementation of the Referendum Verdict, and the Trial of the July Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, and Our Reality.”

At the seminar, NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain said: “There was no accountability in this Bangladesh. The election and judicial systems were destroyed. The movement we waged in July had two objectives — removing Awami League from power, and abolishing the Awami-style or fascist state system. Today’s new Bangladesh has come at the cost of thousands of lives.”

Akhter Hossain further said: “BNP has been dragging its feet on reform issues from the very start, from the discussions at the consensus commission. They will not accept an upper house based on PR voting; they are unwilling to accept a new judicial process, PSC and ACC appointments, and several other reforms.”

The NCP leader said: “The constitutional reforms must be implemented swiftly, accepting the referendum verdict. Many are publicly mocking July in the name of freedom of expression. They too must be brought to justice.”
