Three sentenced to life for gang rape of woman in Tangail

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the gang rape of a woman in Madhupur, Tangail.

District Judge A.N.M. Ilias, judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, announced the verdict on Tuesday (July 7) afternoon.

The convicted are Abdur Rahim, Shafiqul Islam Shafi, and Shamsul Haque Shamsu.

Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Omrao Khan Dipu said the victim was taken from Jamalpur to the Dokhola forest area in Madhupur, Tangail, on June 22, 2023, under the pretext of a marriage viewing. There, one of the accused raped her first, followed by the other two, in a gang assault.

He said a case was filed at Madhupur police station over the incident. Police later submitted a charge sheet to the court following investigation. After judicial proceedings concluded, the court delivered this verdict against the accused.

In the verdict, lead accused Abdur Rahim was sentenced to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000 under Section 7 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000. Under the same law’s Section 9(3), he was additionally sentenced to life imprisonment with labor and fined Tk 100,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in additional imprisonment.

The other two accused, Shafiqul Islam Shafi and Shamsul Haque Shamsu, were convicted under Section 9(3) of the same act and each sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Tk 100,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two years’ simple imprisonment each.
