The mastermind of the July movement is not any single person but the 18 crore people of Bangladesh, National Parliament opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said. “We do not accept any single mastermind,” he said.
He made the remarks while rising on a point of order during the general budget discussion on Sunday, the 17th day of the parliament’s budget session.
Earlier, Jamalpur-1 MP M Rashiduzzaman Millat, citing the opposition leader, had said: “The opposition leader told us about this movement that the chief hero of the movement was Tarique Rahman. So, our opposition leaders, there is no reason for you to be worried about this large budget today. This Tk 9,38,000 crore budget will be fully met.”
Rising on a point of order, opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman said: “Mr Millat has quoted a statement of mine. Yes, I made that statement, but you did not state the time correctly. That time was April 2024. And the change came in August 2024. My statement was after 5 August. At that time, those under whose leadership this uprising succeeded — I think we all respect and love them from the heart. Their place must be kept intact. Even Dr Yunus, going to America, called one person the mastermind. I am the very person who first protested and said we do not accept any single mastermind of this movement. I want to give the credit to our youth. And the mastermind is the 18 crore people of Bangladesh.”
