Friday is called the weekly day of Eid. This day is highly honoured in the sight of Allah and carries great importance and merit. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Friday is the best of days and the most honoured before Allah. (Ibn Majah, hadith 1084)

Many important events are associated with this day. On it, the first father, Adam (peace be upon him), was created; on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it; on the same day he was sent to the world, his repentance was accepted, and he died. On this day the Trumpet will be blown, on this day the Day of Judgement will occur, and on this day all will faint. Every angel close to Allah, the sky, the earth, the wind, the mountains and the seas fear this day. On Friday, the two units of prayer performed in congregation in place of the four units of the noon prayer are the Jummah prayer. The reliable books of hadith contain several traditions on the merit and deeds of this day; a few are mentioned here.

Allah says: “O believers, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.” (Surah Jummah, verse 9)

Bathing: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that whoever bathes on Friday, applies perfume, wears good clothes and goes out for prayer, does not sit between two people, and listens attentively to the imam’s sermon, has his sins forgiven from one Friday to the next and three days more. (Sahih Muslim, hadith 857)

Wearing good clothes and perfume: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever bathes on Friday, wears good clothes, applies any perfume he has, comes to the Jummah prayer without stepping over other worshippers, and stays silent from when the imam comes out for the sermon until the closing salam, will have this act serve as expiation for all his minor sins from the previous Friday to the next. (Sunan Abu Dawud, hadith 343) Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said perfume should be used on Friday if available. (Sahih Bukhari, hadith 880)

Going early to the mosque: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that on Friday angels stand at the mosque door and record the names of those who come, in order; the one who comes first is like one who sacrifices a fat camel, the next like one who sacrifices a cow, the next like one who offers a hen, and so on. (Sahih Bukhari, hadith 929)

Listening attentively to the sermon: Allah says: “When the Quran is recited, listen to it attentively and keep silent, that mercy may be shown to you.” (Surah A’raf, verse 204)

Reciting Surah Kahf: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that whoever recites Surah Kahf on Friday will be kept safe by Allah from all kinds of tribulation for the whole week, and safe even if the Dajjal appears. (al-Ahadith al-Mukhtara, hadith 429) He also said that whoever recites the last 10 verses of Surah Kahf on Friday will not be harmed by the Dajjal if he appears. (Sahih al-Targhib, hadith 1473)

Sending abundant blessings on the Prophet: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Send abundant blessings upon me on Friday, for my community’s blessings are presented to me each Friday. Whoever sends the most blessings upon me will be closest to me on the Day of Judgement.” (al-Sunan al-Kubra, hadith 6208)

Supplication: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said there is a special moment within the 12 hours of Friday when any supplication a Muslim makes to Allah is accepted. (Sunan Abu Dawud, hadith 1048) Hadith scholars have noted this time to be after the afternoon (Asr) prayer.
