Road accidents killed 438 people across Bangladesh in June, with Dhaka division recording the highest number of incidents, the Road Safety Foundation said Sunday. Motorcycle accidents claimed 134 lives in 145 incidents, accounting for 30.59% of total fatalities.
The organization reported 472 road accidents during June, killing 428 people and injuring 561. Among those killed, 44 were women and 56 were children.
The data was compiled from 9 national dailies, 17 national and regional online news portals, electronic media, and the organization’s own records.
Dhaka division recorded the highest toll with 116 accidents killing 118 people. Mymensingh division had the fewest with 19 accidents and 16 deaths. Within the capital, 32 accidents killed 24 people and injured 49.
Pedestrians accounted for 91 deaths, or 20.77% of the total. Vehicle drivers and helpers killed numbered 57, or 13%.
During the same period, 9 waterway accidents killed 7 people and injured 4, while 21 railway accidents killed 18 and injured 7.
By road type, 41.10% of accidents occurred on regional roads, 32% on national highways, 13.55% on rural roads, 12.07% on urban roads, and 1.27% elsewhere. Trucks, covered vans, pickups, tractors, and trolleys were involved in 25.66% of accidents, followed by motorcycles at 22%, three-wheelers at 19.77%, passenger buses at 16.26%, locally made vehicles at 5.59%, microbuses and private cars at 4.62%, and rickshaws and bicycles at 1.54%.
By division, Dhaka accounted for 24.57% of accidents, Chattogram 23.72%, Rajshahi 18.43%, Rangpur 10.16%, Khulna 8.68%, Barishal 5.93%, Sylhet 4.44%, and Mymensingh 4.02%.
The Road Safety Foundation identified reckless driving, defective vehicles, poor road conditions, excessive speed, reckless motorcycle riding by young people, lack of traffic law awareness, weak traffic management, BRTA capacity gaps, and extortion in the public transport sector as major contributing factors.
