A total of 462 people were killed in 530 road accidents in various parts of the country in June this year. Another 750 people were injured in these accidents. The information came from a road-accident report of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
The report, signed by BRTA chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman, was approved on July 12 and published online on July 13. The authority said the report had been prepared by collecting road-accident information through its divisional offices across the country.
According to the report, the highest number of road accidents in June occurred in Chattogram division, where 143 people were killed and 264 injured in 171 accidents. In Dhaka division, 103 people lost their lives and 176 were injured in 115 accidents. In Rajshahi division, 67 people were killed and 66 injured in 65 accidents. In Khulna division, 40 people were killed and 88 injured in 48 accidents. In Barishal, 20 people were killed and 79 injured in 35 accidents. In Sylhet, 20 people were killed and 26 injured in 21 accidents. In Rangpur, 47 people were killed and 23 injured in 47 accidents. In Mymensingh, 22 people were killed and 28 injured in 28 accidents.
According to BRTA data, a total of 827 vehicles were involved in the road accidents in June, including motorcycles, buses, trucks, covered vans, pickups, auto-rickshaws, battery-run rickshaws and various other types of vehicle. By vehicle, the highest number of deaths was in motorcycle accidents, with 121 people killed in motorcycle accidents alone. In addition, 71 people were killed in truck and covered-van accidents, 94 in accidents involving other vehicles, 45 in bus and minibus accidents, 41 in auto-rickshaw accidents, 26 in pickup accidents and 17 in battery-run rickshaw accidents. The BRTA report said 12 people had died in motorcar or jeep accidents in June, six in microbus accidents, four in ambulance accidents, 11 in van accidents, two in tractor accidents and 12 in easy-bike accidents.
