Germany’s opposition Left Party says it will fight politically and publicly against a plan to turn a Volkswagen car plant into a centre for Israeli arms production, Anadolu reports.
“We will oppose this initiative politically and publicly,” Thorben Peters, co-chair of the Left Party in the state of Lower Saxony, told Anadolu. “We want full transparency about the contracts. We oppose converting civilian industry into arms production, and we want to work with workers and trade unions to advance a civilian industrial policy.”
In early September, Volkswagen said it was selling its Osnabrück plant in Germany to the state of Lower Saxony and Tel Aviv-based investor Aurelius Capital. A pilot project with Israeli defence company Rafael has been presented as the plant’s first industrial project.
The Left Party rejects Volkswagen’s argument that selling the plant and converting it to defence production is the only way to save jobs. “Workers are being told they must choose between unemployment and arms production. We will not accept this false choice,” Peters said. “Good industrial policy creates civilian jobs. It does not make peace depend on the next arms order.”
