Islami Chhatra Shibir central president Nurul Islam Saddam alleged that people who attacked campuses were not genuine students and that Chhatra Dal had used former students and hired outsiders. The allegations were not independently verified.
He made the remarks at a student gathering at the Raju Sculpture in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Saddam alleged that people whose student lives had ended 15 to 20 years ago were appointed to Chhatra Dal campus committees and used to attack elected representatives. He also alleged that outsiders had been brought from Narayanganj and Keraniganj.
He alleged armed attacks at Begum Rokeya University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Dhaka Alia, as well as attacks on sleeping students and students at Dhaka Graphics Arts College.
Saddam called on the prime minister to control what he described as violent groups and said Shibir would resist violence if authorities failed to act. He also alleged that police had stood by people carrying machetes, grease, spades and revolvers.
He said coexistence must be maintained on every campus and warned that the government would bear responsibility for further violence. Shibir leaders, representatives of universities and educational institutions, activists and students attended the gathering.
