Members of RAB-12’s Meherpur camp have arrested a young man, Emon Ahmed, 24, during an operation in a border area of Jibannagar upazila, Chuadanga, seizing a large quantity of Indian cough syrup, cash, and a motorcycle used to transport drugs.
The operation was carried out Tuesday afternoon, August 25, in the Natunpara area of Jibannagar upazila. Emon Ahmed, who was arrested, is a resident of the Natunpara area and the son of Jahangir Alam.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Hannan Howlader, acting company commander of RAB-12’s CPC-3 Meherpur camp, said an anti-narcotics operation was carried out in the border area of Natunpara, Jibannagar upazila, based on intelligence information, during which Emon Ahmed was arrested.
Police then recovered 542 bottles of Scarf syrup and 110 bottles of Wincarex syrup from him, 652 bottles in total. They also seized 1,675,000 taka in cash and a motorcycle used to transport the drugs from his possession.
The recovered syrups are of Indian origin. Investigators are examining whether the syrups were brought into Bangladesh through the border area with the intent to supply or sell them as drugs. An investigation is also under way into the source of the large sum of cash recovered.
According to RAB-12’s Meherpur camp, regular operations are being conducted to stop drug smuggling and transport in the border area. Tuesday’s operation was carried out as part of that continued effort, based on intelligence information. The syrup, cash and motorcycle recovered in the operation have been seized through the legal process.
A case has been filed against the arrested Emon Ahmed at Jibannagar police station under Sections 36(1) Table 14(c)/38/41 of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.
RAB said anti-narcotics operations in the border area would be further intensified, and that legal action would be taken against individuals and syndicates involved in drug smuggling.
