Former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, regarded as one of the architects of the country’s remarkable economic rise, has died. China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that the 97-year-old politician died on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment in Beijing.
Zhu served as China’s premier from 1998 to 2003. During his tenure, the economy moved further from a state-controlled structure toward a more market-oriented and globally integrated model. He played a major role in reforms of state-owned enterprises and the financial sector, and in preparing China for entry into the World Trade Organization.
Known for his direct style and focus on administrative and economic reform, Zhu was also associated with efforts to curb inflation, strengthen financial discipline and restructure loss-making state enterprises. His work helped shape the policies that supported China’s rapid growth in the following decades.
