The death toll from a landslide in Renchang village, Dangchang county, in northwestern China’s Gansu province has risen to 21. The landslide occurred at 6:56am on Tuesday, burying 33 people. Rescue teams reached the scene quickly after being notified and began operations.

China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that, according to local authorities, the rescue operation has concluded and 21 people died in the disaster.

Following the landslide, the government has allocated 30 million yuan for reconstruction of the affected area. Meanwhile, on the same day, severe storms and heavy rain in southern and central China killed around 17 people and injured hundreds.

Nearly 40 rivers and waterways have flooded in the southern Guangxi region. A reservoir dam also broke under heavy water pressure, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people to safety.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered maximum effort in the rescue operations.
