The death toll from devastating floods in southern China has risen to 159. Another 10 people remain missing from the disaster, the country’s state media reported.

Widespread damage occurred across various areas of southern China in July due to the effects of Typhoon Matsa. Guangxi region suffered the worst damage from the heavy rain and severe flooding. State media had reported 39 deaths there at the time.

However, state broadcaster CCTV said Friday that the disaster killed a total of 159 people and left 10 missing. CCTV gave no explanation for why the updated death toll was released six weeks after the flooding.

CCTV said that, according to information disclosed at separate meetings held in Guangxi’s Nanning and Guigang cities on post-Typhoon Matsa recovery and reconstruction, more than 1.65 million people were affected by the disaster in the two cities.

Both areas have now fully entered the post-disaster recovery and reconstruction phase, the report said.
