Youth killed in land boundary dispute in Gobindaganj

A gruesome clash over land boundary determination between two parties occurred in Govindaganj of Gaibandha, leaving a seriously injured youth dead. He breathed his last at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Wednesday (May 13) morning while under treatment. Earlier, the incident took place at Nakai Union’s Nakaihat Port in the upazila on Tuesday (May 12) afternoon. At the time, at least 11 people were injured in incidents of stone-throwing, brick-batting, motorbike arson, and vandalism.

The deceased youth has been identified as Anikur Rahman, son of Nurul Hoque Mondol from the Nakaihat Port area, who was locally involved in the flex business.

According to local sources, a dispute over the boundary of a plot of land at Nakaihat port turned into a clash on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred while local surveyors were demarcating the boundary. The clash involved Abdul Malek Pradhan, general secretary of Nakai Union BNP, and his brother Abdul Majed Pradhan, on one side, and supporters of former union BNP president Mahfujar Rahman Mandal’s intimate Shah Alam on the other.

During the clash, people from both sides pelted bricks and stones at each other. At one point, a Hero motorcycle was set on fire, and a Bajaj Discover motorcycle was damaged, according to allegations.

At least 11 people were injured in the incident. Among the injured are — union BNP president Satem, general secretary Abdul Malek Pradhan, Abdul Majid Pradhan, Manik Pradhan, Mehidul Pradhan, and several others.

Severely injured patients were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Bagura Shaheed Jitau Rahman Medical College Hospital. Today, early Wednesday morning, Anikur Rahman died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moazzem Hossain of the Govindaganj Police Station led a team to the scene and worked to bring the situation under control. After reinforcing with additional police, it took nearly two hours to gain control of the situation.

Meanwhile, Senior Assistant Police Superintendent (C-Circle) of Gaibandha District Police, Rashedul Bari, visited the scene. The entire area has been tense and restive since the clash.
