Three people, including an easy-bike driver and two children, were killed in a horrific road accident in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila. Two others were critically injured and are undergoing treatment in hospital. The accident occurred in a head-on collision with a speeding truck. The tragedy took place around noon on Thursday (4 June) in the Alinagar area of Gangni upazila, Meherpur.
The dead are easy-bike driver Arif Hossain, son of Alauddin of Uttarshalika village in Sadar upazila; Abrar Hossain, a child and son of Sajib Hossain of Jhikargachha upazila in Jashore; and Afrin, daughter of Mahin Hossain of Uttarshalika village.
According to police and local sources, the easy-bike was travelling from Bamundi toward Meherpur. On reaching the Alinagar area, it collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. The force of the collision crushed the easy-bike, and driver Arif Hossain died on the spot. Children Abrar and Afrin, along with Mahin and his wife Mukta Khatun, were critically injured. The injured were taken to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where children Abrar and Afrin died while under treatment. Relatives said Mahin and Mukta Khatun also remain in critical condition.
After the accident, locals managed to detain the truck, but the driver fled. On receiving news of the crash, police reached the scene, began rescue work and are continuing the process of taking legal action. Gangni Police OC Uttam Kumar said: “The process of recovering the bodies is under way. The truck involved in the accident has been seized. Necessary legal action will be taken in this case.”
