An investigation committee has confirmed that rotten eggs and moldy bread were served to students at Banshbariya Government Primary School in Gangni upazila, Meherpur, as part of the school feeding program.
The investigation found that 20 of the 133 eggs supplied to the school were rotten or substandard. The inquiry was ordered by State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj after the incident was reported by several media outlets.
The report was submitted by Gangni upazila assistant primary education officers Asadud Doula and S.M. Zainul Islam, the ministry’s public relations officer Md. Tanvir Mia confirmed on Friday.
When the school’s guardian committee and the food supplier, the Satkhira-based NGO Sushilan, were notified, the substandard eggs were replaced with fresh ones within an hour and safe food distribution was ensured, officials said.
State Minister Bobby Hajjaj said in a statement: “No compromise will be made regarding the health and safety of primary school students. A zero-tolerance policy will be followed for quality control in the school feeding program. Suppliers and field-level officials must fulfill their duties more rigorously to prevent such incidents in the future.”
Parents alleged that the upazila education officer and district primary education officer had failed to act due to improper dealings with the supplier. The acting head teacher was issued a show-cause notice instead of action being taken against the supplier, drawing widespread criticism from teachers, parents, and the community.
