An unidentified thief was beaten to death by a mob while trying to steal tyres in Bamundi, in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila.
The killing took place early Tuesday (June 2) at a tyre shop named Khokon Enterprise at the Bamundi bus stand, where the man had come to commit theft.
On receiving the report, a police team led by Gangni police station’s officer-in-charge (OC) Uttam Kumar Das reached the scene.
According to local sources, a five-member gang of thieves came to steal tyres from Khokon Enterprise at about 5 a.m. They broke the shop’s lock and loaded three pairs of truck tyres onto their pickup. When the shop owner and local residents gave chase, four of them fled, but one was caught by the crowd. He was then beaten by the mob and died on the spot.
The Gangni OC said he had inspected the scene and that police were working to identify the unidentified man.
