As temperatures rise on summer days, many people begin to suffer from digestive problems, though many do not understand why. For most people, problems such as acidity, bloating, gas, constipation, nausea and poor appetite increase during intense heat.
According to a report by India TV, in Ayurveda the root cause of these symptoms lies in the body’s digestive power. According to the Ayurveda expert Acharya Manish, the excess heat, dehydration and lifestyle changes of summer can have a negative effect on digestion, so that the body cannot properly process food.
How summer heat affects your digestion: According to Ayurveda, summer is a season that naturally weakens the digestive power. Frequent sweating, dehydration, lack of sleep, mental stress and irregular eating habits can affect the stomach and its functioning, so that the digestive system becomes less effective in hot weather.
What happens when food is not digested properly: According to Ayurveda, when food is not properly digested, toxins begin to accumulate in the body, which can cause fatigue, reduced immunity, weak metabolism, acidity and digestive discomfort. Since every tissue of the body depends on the nutrients obtained through digestion, a healthy digestive system is considered necessary for the well-being of the body.
What can worsen digestion: Modern nutritional science also acknowledges that dehydration and unhealthy eating habits in summer can affect gut health. According to experts, an excessive amount of processed food, fried food, carbonated drinks, tea and coffee, and irregular eating, can put extra strain on digestion and make people feel lazy and tired.
According to Ayurveda, however, a few simple lifestyle changes in hot weather can help improve digestion and overall health, such as: drinking enough water throughout the day; drinking coconut water, buttermilk and lemon water; eating light, freshly prepared food; avoiding fried, spicy and heavily processed food; eating water-rich fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber and pomegranate; avoiding overeating and eating according to one’s digestive capacity; and practising yoga and pranayama.
Ayurvedic medicine places special emphasis on yoga, meditation and breathing exercises to maintain digestive balance. Several postures, including pranayama, can help to naturally regulate the body’s heat. Morning walks, enough sleep and a regular daily routine can also help keep the metabolism active and maintain energy levels in summer.
