A six-year-old girl is being treated in hospital after an alleged sexual assault in Kushtia’s Khoksa upazila, an allegation that has caused alarm in the area. The seriously unwell child was first taken to the Khoksa Upazila Health Complex, from where the doctor on duty referred her to Kushtia General Hospital for better treatment. She is now being treated there.
According to the family and local sources, the child was playing on a road near her home on Wednesday (5 August) afternoon while her parents were busy washing jute in a nearby marsh. It is alleged that a teenage neighbour then took her away on the pretext of taking her to her parents.
Relatives allege the child was sexually assaulted, and that she was later offered chips to buy her silence. When she was returned to her mother a little later, she described what had happened while crying and complained of severe pain, the family said.
Family members quickly took her to the Khoksa Upazila Health Complex. After initial treatment, the doctor referred her to Kushtia General Hospital as she needed better care.
The incident has spread anger and concern in the area, with local residents demanding the accused’s swift arrest and exemplary punishment.
Khoksa police station officer-in-charge (OC) Molla Zakir Hossain said police were aware of the incident but had not yet received a written complaint. Necessary legal steps would be taken as soon as a complaint was received, he said.
