Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has proposed raising the allowance paid to the families of gallantry-award freedom fighters — Bir Sreshtho, Bir Uttam, Bir Bikram and Bir Protik — by 5,000 taka each, to 40,000, 30,000 and 25,000 taka respectively, in the budget for fiscal 2026-27. He made the allocation proposal in parliament on Thursday (11 June). He also proposed keeping the monthly honorarium for general freedom fighters unchanged at 20,000 taka.

In his budget speech the finance minister said the government has taken an initiative to build 4,730 Bir Nibas houses in fiscal 2026-27 to ensure housing for valiant freedom fighters. The government is working tirelessly to preserve the history of the great Liberation War and for the welfare of valiant freedom fighters, he said, with festival allowances, Bangla New Year allowances, medical services, burial grants and other benefits continuing for freedom fighters.

He said an integrated list of valiant freedom fighters has been prepared through an MIS system, and allowances are being paid directly into their bank accounts through the G2P process. State honorarium allowances for war-wounded, gallantry-award and martyred freedom-fighter families are being paid by EFT, and loan facilities are being provided for freedom fighters’ socio-economic development through the Bangladesh Rural Development Board.
