Students at Khulna University (KU) have detained a man working at the canteen of Bijoy ’24 Hall over allegations that a mobile phone was secretly placed in the women students’ washroom. The incident on Wednesday night has caused alarm and concern across the hall.
Students allege that they looked into the matter after spotting a suspicious mobile phone in the washroom, and then detained a man working at the hall canteen on allegations of involvement. According to the students, he had worked at the Bijoy ’24 Hall canteen for about two years.
Several students who witnessed the incident said that as news spread, students from various blocks of the hall gathered there. The accused was then held inside the hall and the relevant university authorities were informed. Concern and anger over security have been evident among resident students since.
Some students claimed that multiple videos were found on the mobile phone used by the accused. It has also been alleged that he had for a long time been secretly recording video through a gap in the hall washroom ventilator and sending those videos to various Telegram groups. Asked about the matter, the provost of Bijoy ’24 Hall said the investigation was continuing. “I do not want to comment on this before the inquiry is complete,” the provost said, adding that the necessary information would be given once it was finished.
The incident has prompted widespread discussion across the university, with many students on social media demanding that the investigation be completed quickly, the facts established and proper legal and administrative action taken against the guilty if the allegations are proven.
