India’s southern state of Kerala has been officially renamed “Keralam.” The new name took effect Tuesday, August 25, after the country’s central Home Ministry issued a notification. The information was reported by India’s NDTV.

The notification, issued Tuesday, said the central government, exercising powers granted under sub-section 2 of Section 1 of the Kerala (Change of Name) Act, 2026, has brought the provisions of the act into effect from August 25.

According to the report, India’s President Droupadi Murmu approved the bill to rename Kerala as “Keralam” earlier this month, turning the bill into law.

The Kerala (Change of Name) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on August 11, and passed in the Rajya Sabha the following day.

Speaking on the matter in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said the Kerala state assembly passed a resolution in 2024 requesting the center to legislate a name change for the state to “Keralam.”

Noting that the state of Kerala would now be known as “Keralam,” the minister said: “That is why the proposal was made to rename Kerala as Keralam.”
