A prisoner serving a life sentence in a rape case has died at Kushtia district jail.
The prisoner complained of chest pain on Monday (July 7) night and was taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead, jail superintendent Shariful Alam said.
The deceased prisoner was identified as Ariful Islam (28), son of Abdul Karim of Rajinathpur village, Shomospur union, Khoksa upazila, Kushtia. He had been serving a life sentence at Kushtia district jail since 2019 after being convicted in a rape case.
Jail superintendent Shariful said: “Ariful suddenly fell ill with chest pain inside the jail on Monday night. He was immediately taken to Kushtia General Hospital.”
Shariful said Ariful’s body was handed over to his family after an autopsy on Wednesday afternoon.
Kushtia General Hospital resident medical officer Iqbal Hasan said Kushtia district jail police brought a man named Ariful Islam to the emergency department on Monday night, but he died before reaching the hospital.
