Police have recovered the body of a nine-year-old schoolgirl about 11 hours after she went missing in Kaliganj, Satkhira. An enraged crowd then beat a woman suspected in the case to death. The events took place around 7 p.m. Monday, July 20.
The girl was a third-grade pupil at a local government primary school.
According to police and local sources, the girl went to school as usual around 8:30 a.m. Monday. When she did not return home after school, family members searched various places and, failing to find her, filed a complaint at Kaliganj police station. Police began a search with local help and, around 7 p.m., recovered the girl’s body from inside a box-bed wardrobe in the home of a 26-year-old woman, a street-snack seller, near the school.
As news of the recovery spread, an enraged crowd beat the woman, who died on the spot.
Kaliganj police officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam confirmed the events and said the case was being investigated with great importance. Both bodies were recovered and sent to the Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. The true cause of death and whether anyone else was connected to the incident would be confirmed based on the autopsy report, collected evidence and further investigation, he said.
