In Islam, the grave is the first stage of the hereafter. A person’s deeds will determine whether they experience peace or punishment there.

Allah says in the Holy Quran: “Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you are in fortified towers.” — Surah An-Nisa, verse 78.

It is narrated in hadith that the Prophet (peace be upon him) regularly sought refuge with Allah from the trial of the Dajjal and the punishment of the grave. He also warned his ummah to be mindful of this matter.

A particular practice for protection from the punishment of the grave is also mentioned in hadith. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a companion had unknowingly pitched a tent over a grave. He then heard a person inside the grave reciting Surah Al-Mulk in its entirety.

When this was reported to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said: “It is a protector, it is a deliverer. It delivers from the punishment of the grave.” — Sunan al-Tirmidhi, hadith 2890.

In another hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), there is a surah in the Quran consisting of 30 verses that will intercede on behalf of its reader and secure forgiveness for them. That surah is Surah Al-Mulk — “Tabarakal-ladhi biyadihil-mulk.” — Sunan al-Tirmidhi, hadith 2891; Sunan Abu Dawud, hadith 1400.

According to Islamic scholars, reciting Surah Al-Mulk every night is a highly meritorious practice. It not only offers hope of protection from the punishment of the grave but also paves the way toward success in the hereafter.
