Garlic is a kitchen staple that does more than add flavor. Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce inflammation and protect against viral infections, and research suggests it can help regulate blood sugar levels. Studies indicate that garlic contains natural compounds that can improve the body’s ability to use insulin and regulate glucose. The question is whether raw or cooked garlic is more effective.
Indian media outlet Ei Samay reported that eating garlic on an empty stomach can lower blood sugar levels. Allicin, a sulfur compound in garlic, helps increase insulin secretion and effectiveness, which in turn helps regulate blood sugar. However, garlic is not a permanent solution for diabetes or pre-diabetes, the report said.
Crushing or chopping raw garlic is the most effective method, though many people find the strong odor unpalatable.
After cutting or crushing garlic, let it sit for about five minutes to allow the allicin compound to form. If raw garlic is difficult to eat, crushed or chopped garlic can be mixed into cooking. Let chopped garlic sit in open air before cooking. Avoid cooking garlic at high temperatures for extended periods, as this can reduce the effectiveness of its beneficial compounds.
For healthy adults, 1 to 2 cloves of garlic per day is sufficient. Eating more than needed will not provide additional benefits and may cause stomach problems including acidity, heartburn, bloating, and gas. Those taking blood-thinning medication or expecting surgery should consult a doctor before increasing garlic intake.
