Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has warned of an “unforgettable lesson” for the United States. He said that as the American enemy sought to inflame the war further and bring about terrible consequences, they should know the beloved Iranian nation and the axis of resistance had an unforgettable lesson prepared for them. The statement, broadcast on Iran’s state television, said the ongoing attacks on the country had again proved that the US president’s signature is worthless. It added that in matters of agreement the “Great Satan” had repeatedly broken its promises, proving that the US president’s signature is now completely worthless and illegitimate, and that oppression, hegemony and barbarity are inseparable parts of US belief and policy.
Khamenei’s senior military adviser, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, warned that if US attacks continued over the coming days, Iran would resume full-scale military operations and would no longer be limited to proportionate retaliation. Tit-for-tat strikes between Iran and the United States have continued for an eighth day since the memorandum of understanding collapsed. According to Iran’s health ministry, at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured since the fighting resumed, up to Friday. The United States said two of its soldiers had been killed in Jordan in the new clashes with Iran, with one still missing.
Various international media reported that the United States had sharply increased its attacks on southern Iran, striking important civilian infrastructure for the first time and destroying at least five bridges, as well as hitting an airport in the south. CNN reported that the United States could completely cut off southern Iran and mount a ground operation there. Iran, in a stern warning, said that if its civilian infrastructure was attacked, everything in the Middle East would be flattened, and it has already increased its attacks on various Middle Eastern countries. Kuwait complained that Iran had targeted its civilian installations and important infrastructure, spreading fear among ordinary people. Kuwaiti resident Hassan Rayan said demand for bottled water and canned food had risen since morning, with people fearing services and supplies could be disrupted; another resident, Ali Mahmoud, said roads and beaches were almost deserted despite a public holiday.
Iran’s army claimed it had struck an air base used by the United States in Bahrain and had also targeted a fuel-storage tank at a US base at al-Azraq in Jordan. Jordan’s army said it had shot down 10 missiles on Saturday and at least three the previous day. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, told state television that Tehran had suspended all its commitments under the “Islamabad memorandum of understanding” — the initial deal to end the Iran war — saying the United States had violated all its commitments and withdrawn from it, so Iran too had suspended all its commitments.
