The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a project to set up one technical school and college in each of 100 upazilas (third revised), under the education ministry. It also approved five development projects costing a total of Tk 7,003.36 crore. Of the approved expenditure, Tk 4,536.10 crore will come from the Bangladesh government’s own funds and Tk 2,467.26 crore as project loans.

The approvals came at an ECNEC meeting held on Tuesday (June 16) in the cabinet room of the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tarique Rahman. Of the projects approved at this meeting, three are entirely new and two are revised.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Local Government and Rural Development Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Industries, Textiles and Jute and Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, and State Minister for Planning Md. Junaid Abdur Rahim Saki, along with senior government officials, were present at the meeting.

Among the projects approved is a special project under the Prime Minister’s Office — the Supporting Infrastructure Project for Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone. Three projects were also approved under the water resources ministry. These include the rehabilitation of the Muhuri-Kahua flood control, drainage and irrigation project in Feni district (first phase); the Karatoa river system development project; and a project to protect the Talbaria area of Mirpur upazila and the Komarkandi area of Shilaidaha union in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district from Padma river erosion (first revised). Alongside these, the education ministry’s project to set up one technical school and college in each of 100 upazilas (third revised) was also approved at the meeting.

In addition to these five main projects, ECNEC was formally informed of four more projects, each costing less than Tk 50 crore and previously approved through the planning minister. These include the construction of an airmen’s barrack complex at the Bangladesh Air Force base in Cox’s Bazar; the establishment of the Navy School and College in Savar; the construction of physical infrastructure to improve teaching standards and capacity at the existing BAF Shaheen College at Bangladesh Air Force Station Shamshernagar; and the fourth phase of the pagoda-based pre-primary and Cripitak education program.
