The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has approved eight development projects at a cost of about 14,041.21 crore taka. Three are new projects and five are revised. (1 crore = 10 million.)
The approved projects include integrated development of greater Dinajpur, rural road maintenance, construction of disaster shelters, the Dhaka-Ashulia elevated expressway, improvement of the power distribution system in Sylhet division, drilling of new gas exploration wells, and expansion of kidney dialysis services in the country’s medical colleges and district hospitals.
The projects were approved at an Ecnec meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, July 22. Prime Minister and Ecnec chairperson Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting.
The planning ministry said implementing the eight approved projects will cost a total of 14,041.21 crore taka — 10,494.21 crore taka from the government’s own funds and 3,550.44 crore taka from foreign loans.
Three of the approved projects belong to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives: Universal Social Infrastructure Development-2 (first revision), the integrated development project for greater Dinajpur (Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh) districts, and the rural road maintenance and employment project.
Also approved were the disaster shelter construction, renovation and development project (third revision) of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the Dhaka-Ashulia elevated expressway construction project (second revision) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, and the Sylhet division power distribution system improvement project (third revision) of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Under another important energy project, approval was given for drilling the Begumganj-5 appraisal well and the Begumganj-6 and Sunetra-2 exploration wells. Meanwhile, a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare project will upgrade existing kidney dialysis centres at medical college hospitals to 50 beds and set up new 10-bed kidney dialysis centres at district sadar hospitals.
The planning minister also briefed Ecnec on 11 already-approved projects costing less than 50 crore taka each. These include setting up regional offices of the National University, Barishal Textile Vocational Institute, mobile network installation at the third terminal of Shahjalal International Airport, various highway improvements, power transmission infrastructure for the Rooppur nuclear power plant, expansion of the eastern grid and new BITAC centres.
