Five die of dengue in a day, 839 new cases confirmed

Five more people died of dengue in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 839 people were hospitalized with the disease during the same period. In total, 28 people have died and 13,619 have been infected over the first 23 days of this month.

The figures were disclosed Sunday in a dengue-related press release from the Directorate General of Health Services’ (DGHS) Health Emergency Operations Center and control room.

The notice said that from 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, dengue patients were hospitalized as follows: 117 in Barishal division, 100 in Chattogram, 135 in Dhaka division (outside the city corporations), 61 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 91 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 159 in Khulna, 79 in Mymensingh, 71 in Rajshahi, 23 in Rangpur and 3 in Sylhet. During this period, 796 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

DGHS said the total number of dengue cases since January this year has risen to 28,929, with 82 deaths recorded so far this year. Of those deaths, two occurred in January, two in February, one in May, 13 in June and 36 in July. Of all dengue patients so far, 61.9 percent are male and 38.1 percent female.
