The Bangladesh Army has formed a new unit called the “Second Bangladesh Battalion.” The four companies under this battalion have been named after Islam’s four caliphs — Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA), Hazrat Usman (RA), and Hazrat Ali (RA).
According to a notice published on the Bangladesh Army’s Facebook page on June 18, the Chief of Army Staff inaugurated the Second Bangladesh Battalion at the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA).
The notice said the new battalion was established alongside the existing First Bangladesh Battalion to enhance the professional skills, leadership qualities, and training standards of officer cadets at BMA in order to meet the challenges of modern warfare.
An army source said the First Bangladesh Battalion has five companies named after Liberation War heroes: Jahangir Company, Rauf Company, Hamid Company, Nur Mohammad Company, and Mostafa Company.
The source said the new Second Bangladesh Battalion represents an expansion of the army’s training structure, with the company naming introducing a new tradition.
Additionally, two more companies have been proposed for the Second Bangladesh Battalion. These units, planned as the army’s first full female companies, have been proposed to be named after the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) daughter Hazrat Fatima (RA) and wife Hazrat Aisha (RA). However, these two companies have not yet received approval.
Army sources said the need for a new battalion arose as the number of officer cadets increases each year.
