Turkey will not get involved in any kind of direct military conflict with Israel, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said, amid sharp exchanges between officials of the two countries in recent days.
In Fidan’s view, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some of his close associates are manufacturing such provocative situations to gain electoral advantage. The Turkish foreign minister made the remarks in a special interview with the UAE-based newspaper The National.
Fidan said there was no logical reason or need for Turkey to go to war with Israel. “I have noticed that whenever elections draw near in Israel, this kind of threatening talk is heard from politicians of both the ruling and opposition parties,” he said. “But Ankara will not fall into Netanyahu’s electoral trap.”
The Turkish foreign minister claimed that in their fight for political survival, Netanyahu and his allies always need an enemy. Israel was already engaged in war against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, he noted, and now Turkey had emerged as a new enemy for many Israeli politicians seeking to get past the electoral hurdle. Not all Israeli politicians or citizens shared the same mindset, Fidan said: “Thank God there are still some sensible and intelligent people in Israel who are not extremists like Netanyahu and his followers.”
