Gideon Levy, a prominent writer and columnist for the influential Israeli daily Haaretz, has said the current situation between the United States, Israel and Iran remains extremely volatile and dangerous. In an interview with the Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera, he said that in the ongoing geopolitical game, it is Israel that has ultimately suffered a crushing defeat.

Levy said that even beyond U.S. President Donald Trump, there are many influential figures within his administration’s White House, the State Department and the Republican Party who hold far more critical attitudes toward Israel’s policies and role than Trump does.

In his view, if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now damages or ruins his relationship with Donald Trump, Israel will face an unprecedented and difficult challenge it has never seen before. The severe negative consequences of that hostility, he said, would become clear within a very short time.

The senior analyst further warned that, overall, Israel has now become a major obstacle for the United States and personally for President Donald Trump. From now on, he said, Washington would regard and treat Israel as a major impediment or obstacle.
