TEHRAN — Iranian parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has analyzed the economic “cards” held by Washington and Tehran, dismissing U.S. claims of dominance and saying the United States has already lost a large part of its strength.
By contrast, Tehran still holds some important “cards” that have not yet been played, he said in a post on his account on the social media platform X on Sunday.
Ghalibaf laid out an equation. On one side, he said, are Iran’s supply-side capabilities — the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and oil pipelines. On the other are U.S. demand-side measures — releases from strategic reserves, demand controls and possible price adjustments.
Tehran still has options it has not used, he said, while the United States has already deployed or partially used several of its tools.
Addressing the United States, he wrote: “They are boasting about their cards. Let’s see — supply cards versus demand cards.”
On Tehran’s side, he said the Strait of Hormuz card has been used partially, while the Bab el-Mandeb and pipeline cards have not yet been played.
Among Washington’s cards, he said, oil has been released from reserves, demand controls have been partially applied and further price adjustments may come in the future.
Highlighting U.S. “economic constraints,” Ghalibaf added that rising fuel demand in the United States during the summer holiday season also needs to be taken into account.
