China has expressed strong displeasure over the United States’ latest round of economic sanctions on Iran, saying all of its economic and diplomatic cooperation with Iran is conducted within the bounds of international law.

Beijing believes that no third country should interfere with or obstruct this normal cooperation between the two nations. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian made this position clear Tuesday, August 25, in response to a question at the ministry’s regular briefing.

The United States recently imposed new sanctions on 60 individuals, entities and ocean-going vessels as part of its pressure campaign against Iran. Washington claims the move will deal a major blow to Iran’s economy.

Referring to the US sanctions, China’s foreign ministry spokesman said Beijing is closely monitoring the entire situation. He said China will not hesitate to take any necessary steps to protect the business rights of its mainland or any of its companies if they are infringed upon.

China and Iran have a long-standing strategic and trade relationship, which includes Iran’s oil exports to China. While the United States has imposed numerous economic sanctions on Iran over an extended period, Beijing has consistently maintained that any sanctions imposed unilaterally by a country, without UN Security Council approval, are not consistent with international law. As a result, Beijing has reiterated its commitment to keeping China-Iran trade intact, without regard for the latest US sanctions.
