US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Citing a Wall Street report, unnamed US officials said Trump dismissed the proposal. Only a few hours earlier, Iran had presented the new roadmap for reopening the Strait of Hormuz to normal traffic.

Under Iran’s proposal, the Strait of Hormuz was to be opened to normal maritime movement within one week. In exchange, the United States was asked to release $12 billion in blocked Iranian assets, lift sanctions on Iranian oil and end naval blockades at ports. It also called for an end to all hostilities, including in Lebanon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said talks on a final agreement could begin from the seventh day if the conditions were met.

However, the United States has not yet given any formal response to the proposal. US officials said Washington does not want to rush the matter and believes it is in an advantageous position, although indirect talks between the two sides are still continuing through Qatar and other mediators.

Analysts say the situation could now turn toward a new conflict. According to the Wall Street report, Trump has told his advisers he is considering renewed bombing or military operations against Iran after the US midterm elections in November.

Experts say Trump does not want to end the war on terms that are unfavorable to him, and the future of the conflict will depend on the November election results and the balance in the US Congress.
