Paltan police have rearrested an accused named Golam Azam, 45, who had earlier escaped by tactically slipping away while leading prayers, police said.

He was arrested on Wednesday (June 17) morning after a raid in the Nandipara area of Madartek in the capital, carried out with the help of information technology.

Paltan police officer-in-charge Mostafa Kamal said an arrest warrant had been issued against Golam Azam, proprietor of Rikab International Tours and Travels, in a case filed at a Chandpur court under the Overseas Employment and Migration Act, 2013. To execute the warrant, police raided his establishment in the capital’s Purana Paltan last Monday (June 15).

The officer-in-charge said that at the time of the arrest, Golam Azam asked permission to perform the Asr prayers. When police granted permission, he began leading the prayers with the officials and staff of the office. But during the second rakat, while the worshippers were prostrating, he fled out the back.

After that, with the help of detective police and using information technology, his location was identified on Wednesday morning, and he was rearrested in a raid on his residence.

Police said Golam Azam has long been involved in the manpower export business. He faces allegations in several human-trafficking cases. Although he identified himself as an influential BNP leader, he holds no organisational position in the party and was expelled long ago, police said. He also faces allegations of using photographs taken with various political figures on social media to extend his influence, police said.

Paltan police said legal action would be taken against him after investigating the allegations in the case and related matters.
