SYDNEY — Australia is grappling with a severe mouse infestation that threatens food production, the government said Saturday, vowing to work jointly with farms to tackle the crisis.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen said in televised remarks from Sydney that the government is clearly concerned about the mouse situation in Western Australia. Australia’s wheat harvesting season begins in April, when mouse activity also surges. The rodents destroy large amounts of crops. Australia is the world’s fourth-largest wheat producer.

The country faced a similar devastating mouse outbreak in 1993. The rodents attacked crops as well as pigs, chickens and even humans. With the infestation growing, the government has urged farmers to remain vigilant and use stronger methods to control the mice, Reuters reported.

The government said in a statement that the mouse outbreak is making conditions difficult for the government, farmers and the entire industry.
