Former Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen said in a media interview that they never imagined Iran would be capable of destroying US bases in the Middle East.

He said extended aircraft carrier deployments are a familiar practice. However, when US President Donald Trump remarked that the current carrier deployments still weren’t long enough, Mullen responded that such extended deployments negatively affect crew members.

Mullen made the remarks Sunday night on ABC News’s “This Week.” Discussing Iran’s military capability and the Islamic Republic’s defensive operations against US and Israeli aggression, he said: “I think we clearly did not expect that US bases in the region — where our troops had previously been stationed — would be destroyed and wiped out.”

Meanwhile, following reports about the crisis in the supply system aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed on an extended mission to support the war against Iran in West Asia, and after startling reports emerged regarding suicide-related concerns among its crew, several members of the US House of Representatives have demanded an explanation on the matter.

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln carries roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines. Its mission began on November 21 and has been extended to support the United States’ aggressive war against Iran in West Asia.
