WASHINGTON — After peace talks between the United States and Iran broke down in Islamabad, Pakistan, fresh hope is emerging. Representatives of the two countries are preparing to restart negotiations, most likely by Thursday.
The Associated Press reported the information, citing a U.S. official and a diplomat from a mediating country. The venue for the meeting has not yet been confirmed.
Officials said both sides had agreed in principle to resume talks. Washington has been in regular contact with mediators since the Islamabad meeting. Pakistan is exchanging messages between Tehran and Washington.
Sources said Geneva, Switzerland, is being considered as an alternative venue. Otherwise, the talks could return to Islamabad.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance said any next round of dialogue with Iran depends entirely on Tehran. “The ball is now in Iran’s court,” he said.
In an interview with Fox News, Vance said the United States wants a final commitment from Iran not to build nuclear weapons.
If Iran agrees on that point, a good deal is possible for both countries, he said.
