British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has hinted that rejoining the European Union could be an option for the government to consider as it seeks to rebuild Britain’s long-term relationship with Europe.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, the prime minister said the current Brexit deal had done more harm than good and that he wanted to look at what could be done to repair relations with Europe.
Earlier, in a speech to the Labour Party’s annual conference on Tuesday, he pledged to explore ways of strengthening ties with the EU through a summit later this year.
The move could open a major political divide at the next general election. The Conservative Party has already accused him of trying to “reopen old wounds by reigniting the battles of the Brexit era”.
In his first conference speech as prime minister, Burnham also announced several other policies, including changing the pension triple lock rules from 2030 to fund a national care service, and including plans for electoral reform in Labour’s next manifesto.
Burnham also told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that it would be no exaggeration to say Britain could face another energy crisis this winter, adding that he was doing everything he could to ease the burden of bills on ordinary people.
