Grapes are a favorite for many people. But they are also among the fruits and vegetables most likely to carry pesticide residue from the market. If they are not cleaned properly, the residue can be harmful to health.

Because grapes grow in tight clusters and their skin is very thin, chemical residue clings easily to the surface. Rinsing with water alone is not enough — a proper cleaning method is needed. A few common household ingredients can be used to clean grapes at home.

Why grapes carry more pesticide

Grape vines are vulnerable to insects, fungi and mold, so farmers spray them frequently with pesticides. Grape clusters are small and densely packed, which lets chemical residue settle in the gaps between fruits. Eating improperly cleaned grapes can transfer those chemicals to the body.

How to clean grapes

First, rinse the grapes under running water for 20 to 30 seconds. Gently rub them with your hand to wash off dust and dirt.

Next, soak the grapes in a baking soda solution. This is considered the most effective cleaning method. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda in one liter of water and soak the grapes for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse with clean water. The alkaline nature of baking soda helps break down pesticide residue.

Mix one part vinegar with three parts water. Soak the grapes in the mixture for five to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water so the flavor of the grapes is not affected.

After soaking in baking soda or vinegar solution, rinse the grapes well. Rub them lightly with your fingers or a clean cloth to remove any remaining residue. Dry the grapes afterward; this helps keep them fresh longer.

Another simple and effective method is to soak the grapes in water mixed with one teaspoon of salt. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse with clean water. This removes chemical residue from the fruit.
