Many varieties of mango are now available in the market. As prices come within reach during the peak season, many people are buying large quantities of mango at once. But a problem arises with storage. It is not possible to keep all the mangoes in the fridge alongside other items. And in the intense heat, leaving mangoes out at the home’s normal temperature risks them ripening or rotting quickly. Ways to preserve mangoes have been suggested in a report by Anandabazar to solve this problem. It says that following a few steps can keep mangoes fresh for some days. They are:

1. After bringing them home from the market, soak the mangoes in cold water in a bucket or basin for at least two to three hours. This lowers the natural temperature inside the mango. As a result, they do not start to ripen quickly. Then take them out of the water and wipe each mango thoroughly with a dry cotton cloth.

2. To retain the mangoes’ moisture and protect them from the excess heat outside, wrap each mango in any ordinary paper. Then arrange them side by side in a cardboard box or basket. This keeps the mangoes from ripening easily or developing black spots.

3. It is never right to keep mangoes in a plastic bag. If there is no box, you can spread jute matting or newspaper on the floor and lay the mangoes out on it.

4. To store mangoes, choose a corner of the home that does not get direct sunlight or heat but has air circulation.

5. When arranging the mangoes, do not pile them together. Keep a little distance and place another mango next to it.

6. Check the mangoes once every day. If you spot a black mark on any mango, or can tell it has started to soften, remove those from the rest.
