The United States is set to withdraw troops from its last military bases in Iraq by September 30. After more than two decades of war in which about 4,500 US troops were killed, Iran and its allies see the pullout as a victory.
An agreement on withdrawing US-led coalition forces from Iraq was reached in 2024 under then US President Joe Biden. Donald Trump’s administration is now carrying out that decision.
Abu Mujtaba al-Yasiri, a commander of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, called the US withdrawal a “historic victory” and said the end of a “dark chapter” in Iraq’s history would be celebrated on September 30. Iraq’s sovereignty cannot be secured by foreign troops, but only through resistance and the will of the people, he said.
