Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that activities of the banned Awami League, which he called a “fascist” group, are being observed during the month of August, and that everyone has been asked to stay vigilant.

He made the remarks on Sunday (2 August) morning while responding to reporters’ questions after the passing-out parade marking the end of the first phase of training for the 27th BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sarda, Rajshahi.

On the “bomb scare” created recently by abandoned bags found in various parts of the country, the home minister said no explosives had been found in the recovered bags. He said the overall law and order situation was under control.

“The abandoned bags found yesterday were examined and no bomb was found in them,” the minister said. “In the interest of public safety, whenever an abandoned bag or a suspicious object is seen anywhere, the law enforcement agencies examine it with the utmost caution.”

However, the object recovered from inside a pressure cooker in Ashulia and a suspicious object found in Motijheel are being investigated separately, the home minister said. Who is involved in these incidents, and whether there is any instigation behind them, is being looked into, he added.

Citing crime figures for the past five to six months, the minister said that, proportionally and comparatively, the level of such crime or sabotage in the country was currently much lower. The situation was in no way alarming, he said, adding that a bomb disposal unit was being kept ready round the clock to ensure public safety.

The home minister also said the law enforcement agencies were alert to foil any plans for sabotage.
