India’s government has publicly released for the first time the names of six military personnel killed in action during Operation Sindoor. Five were members of the Indian Army and one was a sergeant of the Indian Air Force.

The government said the six personnel will be commemorated at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where their names, ranks and units will be permanently inscribed.

The names are: Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Agniveer Murali Nayek, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh, and Indian Air Force Sergeant Surendra Kumar.

The names were released as part of the full list of military personnel who gave their lives during various operations in 2025.

The Tyaga Chakra — the section of the National War Memorial dedicated to those who made the supreme sacrifice for India — consists of 16 concentric circular granite walls on which the name, rank and unit of every soldier killed in the line of duty since independence has been inscribed. The names of the six Operation Sindoor personnel will now be added to that memorial.

Operation Sindoor was launched on 7 May 2025 in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed. India struck what it described as militant bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Pakistan launched retaliatory strikes, triggering four days of aerial combat, drone attacks and sustained exchanges of fire across the border. The conflict ended on 10 May.

Indian authorities have said the name “Sindoor” — the red vermillion worn by Hindu married women in the parting of their hair — was chosen as a symbolic reference to the Pahalgam attack victims’ wives being widowed.
