A record of nearly 4.7 million individual taxpayers successfully filed income-tax returns through e-return in the 2025-26 tax year, allowing taxpayers to easily prepare and submit their annual returns from home. The information came in a National Board of Revenue (NBR) press release on Wednesday.
The NBR said it had, from Wednesday, opened online income-tax return (e-return) filing for individual taxpayers for the 2026-27 tax year. A 5 percent incentive (up to a maximum of 25,000 taka) on net tax payable will be given for returns filed between July and September.
Since online return filing was introduced in 2021, it has become widely popular among taxpayers, the NBR said. Online filing has been made mandatory for all ordinary individual taxpayers by special order. However, elderly taxpayers aged 65 or above, physically incapable or special-needs taxpayers (on submission of a certificate), Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh may file paper returns.
If someone cannot file online because of a registration problem in the e-return system, they may submit a paper return with the approval of the relevant additional or joint tax commissioner.
On payment, the NBR said taxpayers can pay tax from home through www.etaxnbr.gov.bd using bank transfer, debit and credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad and other mobile financial services. Filing a return with correct information allows the immediate collection of an acknowledgment receipt and income-tax certificate.
Help with e-return filing is available through the NBR call center (09643717171) and other electronic channels during office hours except on government holidays, it said.
From the 2026-27 tax year, a 5 percent incentive (up to 25,000 taka) on net tax payable applies to returns filed between July and September; the incentive does not apply after that, and returns filed after December incur additional tax. The NBR urged taxpayers to file within the set time.
