NAYPYIDAW — Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred from prison to house arrest, her lawyer said Friday, adding that the government has cut her sentence by one-sixth. It remains unclear whether Suu Kyi will be permitted to serve the rest of her sentence under house arrest.

State media reported that Min Aung Hlaing seized power in a 2021 military coup, ousting the democratically elected government led by Suu Kyi. The 80-year-old leader had been believed to be detained in a military prison in the capital, Naypyidaw. Min Aung Hlaing has headed the junta government since the coup and was elected president of Myanmar on April 3.

In a statement, Min Aung Hlaing said Suu Kyi had been allowed to serve the remainder of her sentence at a “designated residence.” State media published a photo of her with two military officers. But her son, Kim Aris, said he was not reassured by the announcement, adding that he has no proof his mother is still alive. He dismissed the published photo as “meaningless,” saying it was taken in 2022.
