The social media platform X has shut down more than 13,000 accounts linked to three suspected networks spreading foreign influence in US politics. The platform said the networks have links to Iran, Russia and China.

X’s Global Government Affairs team announced the move in a recent post. It did not say how many of the closed accounts were linked to each country. According to X’s statement, the accounts were run under fake identities and used to publish and amplify posts about US politics. The company said the activity targeted candidates and prominent figures across the political spectrum.

X said the step was part of a tightening of security on the platform ahead of the US midterm elections on 3 November. Its security team uses a range of detection methods to identify and stop activity that breaks the platform’s rules, the company said.

X also said its “authenticity policy” plays a key part in acting against both spam networks and coordinated influence groups operating under fake identities. It said it was working to stop coordinated activity that could undermine the integrity and credibility of the platform.

Separately, X said it had also closed the accounts of an Iran-linked network accused of trying to influence political debate in the United States. It did not give the number of Iran-linked accounts or details of the network’s activity.
