A woman has stabbed her husband to death after a family quarrel and an allegation of an extramarital affair, relatives and neighbours say. It happened on Thursday in Dakshin Dhalla village in Singair upazila, Manikganj.

The dead man is Rashedul Islam, 38, son of the late Chhorman Ali of Dhubni village in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat, and a father of two. He worked as a sample supervisor at SKH Garments in Raj Phulbaria, Savar.

The accused is his wife, Hasna Akter, 32, a machine operator at Vertex Garments. Both came from the same area.

Local people said 12 people from different districts jointly bought land in Dakshin Dhalla village in 2019 and built houses there. Nine families have since moved in, among them Rashedul and Hasna’s.

People living in the next room, who asked not to be named, said the couple had been at odds for some time over family quarrels. “Before dawn today we all went over when we heard their two children screaming. From outside the room we saw Rashedul covered in blood, and his wife, in a rage, with a knife in her hand,” they said.

The room was unlocked with the children’s help and the injured Rashedul was carried out to the road beside the house to be taken to hospital, where he died. Hasna fled in the meantime.

The dead man’s son, Abul Hasan, said: “My father and I were sleeping in one room. My mother was sleeping with my sister in the next room. At about 4am I woke to my father’s screams and saw him covered in blood. My mother was standing beside him with a bloodstained knife.” He said she was speaking of his father’s relationship with another woman, and that his mother had killed his father.

The dead man’s daughter, Rumaiya, a fifth-grader, said her mother had brought a sharp knife and hidden it in the wardrobe. “When I asked, she said it was for cutting my birthday cake. She killed my father with that knife,” she said.

Singair police station officer-in-charge Md Mazharul Islam said the body had been recovered and sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination after an inquest report. The knife used in the killing and the dead man’s bloodstained clothes have been recovered, and a case is being prepared.
