Police in Savar, Dhaka, caught three suspects in the act as they tried to kill an auto-rickshaw driver named Nuruzzaman by tying a rope around his neck in order to steal his vehicle.

They were detained early on Tuesday, 20 October, at the Bhanga Bridge area of Baliarpur on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar.

The three suspects, Fasid, Siam and Ohidul Islam, live in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

Police said the three boarded the victim’s auto-rickshaw at Gabtoli early on Tuesday. When they reached the embankment road, they told the driver to go to Baliarpur. At the Bhanga Bridge area, one of them wrapped a rope around the driver’s neck with the intent to kill him while the other two began tying his hands and feet. When the victim shouted for help, members of a police patrol heard his cries. Police moved quickly and caught the three suspects in the act.

The three are in the custody of Savar Model police station. A case is being filed against them there and they are being sent to court.

“If we had arrived two minutes later, the suspects would have killed the victim. The quick police action saved his life, and police were able to catch the three suspects at the scene,” said sub-inspector Zakir Al Hasan, in charge of the Aminbazar police outpost.
